To grow healthy turnips, plant climate-suitable varieties in well-draining soil amended with organic matter, sowing seeds directly into the garden in early spring or late summer and thinning seedlings to 4 inches apart. Maintain consistent moisture with deep watering and organic mulch, and use balanced fertilizers with emphasis on phosphorus.
